Ford Mondeo in Nigeria

The third-generation Ford Mondeo was a fantastic vehicle with a roomy interior, high levels of equipment, powerful engines, and a thrilling driving experience. What it lacked was a premium badge, which is a good thing when buying used because the Mondeo is an even better deal. There are a lot of clunkers out there, but there are also some fantastic cars — and they're not all low-mileage.

Thanks to vehicles like the Cortina and Sierra, Ford used to have a huge share of the large family car market. But that was a long time ago; by the time the original Mondeo debuted in 1993, the Germans had already begun to chip away at the brand’s market share. Even though the product has improved over the last 24 years, Ford's fortunes have deteriorated.

The Mondeo is in a difficult sector, squeezed by premium-badge competitors, crossovers, and SUVs, but don't let that deter you from buying one. The previous-generation variant, in particular, is one of the greatest used family cars on the market. For a year, experts drove a 2.0 TDCi Mondeo Estate on the Auto Express fleet and liked every minute of it.

Which one should You buy?

Any turbocharged engine, whether petrol or diesel, feels energetic; the 2.0 TDCi is the most prevalent. Saloons are less expensive than hatchbacks, but they're less functional and more difficult to find. Even the base Edge features air conditioning, Bluetooth, cruise control, electric front windows, and a heated windscreen. Dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels, power rear windows, and a height-adjustable driver's seat are all standard on the Zetec.

The Ghia gets heated and electrically adjustable door mirrors, while the Titanium gets sports front seats and additional cabin illumination. Adaptive headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear parking sensors, heated front seats, an Alcantara, and leather upholstery.

Alternatives to the Ford Mondeo

The Vauxhall Insignia offers excellent value, is available in hatchback or estate body styles, and there are plenty of them. It has comparable equipment, practicality, and dependability as the Mondeo, but it is not as enjoyable to drive.

Other top-value options are the Peugeot 508 and Citroen C5, but we'd rather go with a Skoda Octavia because of its outstanding reliability and vast availability; prices, though, are unexpectedly costly. The Mazda 6 is a fashionable alternative to the Ford that comes with some good engines.

The Volkswagen Passat, which also comes with powerful engines and technologies, bridges the gap between mainstream and premium. Just keep in mind that you'll be paying more than for an equivalent Mondeo.

What to look for

  1. Digital radio: Many owners have experienced difficulties getting their DAB radios to function. A software update may fix the problem, but don't count on it.
  2. Steering: Check the steering for lightness and quietness; if the steering is heavy or makes whining noises as the wheel is turned, the rack may have failed.
  3. Cruise control: The cruise control switch's contacts might wear out, causing the system to fail. Switch cleaners should be able to help.
  4. Air-con: Early cars' air-conditioning condensers might break prematurely; many of them have been replaced under warranty by now, but check it nevertheless.
