Jaguar X-Type in Nigeria
This vehicle was introduced in 2001 to considerable fanfare as the British brand's challenger to the BMW 3 Series, and as a car that would push the company’s manufacturing figures closer to those of its German rivals. Unfortunately, such was not the case.
The fact that it was based on the same mechanicals as the second-generation Ford Mondeo was both a benefit and a curse; it meant it had snappy handling, but it lacked rear-wheel drive and was perceived as a Ford in drag by many people.
The four-wheel-drive-only transmission was its unique selling feature at debut, but it has since been joined by a front-wheel-drive version. This entry-level model, as well as the adoption of a diesel engine and a smart estate - a first for the company - have aided the X-Type.
Engine and performance of the Jaguar X-Type
The engine lineup includes three V6s with displacements of 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 liters, as well as a turbodiesel with a displacement of 2.0 liters.
All offer a sophisticated pace, but you have to work the 2.0-liter engine hard to obtain more typical Jaguar performance, with the gearbox on all versions being a barrier to the driving experience, feeling notchy, and marring smooth progress.
Handling and Cargo Space
Underneath, it's distantly linked to the Ford Mondeo, but that's not a bad thing; the ride, handling, and grip are excellent, striking a nice mix between comfort and athletic ability. The steering is direct, although it has an unnatural feel to it.
The cabin is the car’s, but there are some spots where it was made to save money, and it isn't the most spacious car in its class. The diesel and estate have undoubtedly added to the range's attractiveness, but it's a case of too little, too late.
Review of the Jaguar X-Type 2008
The current wave of updates has given the baby car model a new lease on life, especially in sleek estate form.
The combination of a smooth diesel engine, a quick-shifting automatic transmission, and a comfortable cabin makes this an enjoyable and capable long-distance companion. However, the facelift can't cover all of the problems in the seven-year-old design – dynamically, the model still lags behind the competition.
Even though the model is nearing the end of its production run, the seven-year-old car is putting on a brave new face! It's certainly determined to go out in style, with a redesign and new automatic transmission. You can check it out on Cars45.
Luxury and interior
Buyers aren't shortchanged when it comes to luxury. The well-built cabin features high-quality materials, soft-touch plastics, and a new trim range with futuristic carbon fiber elements (although traditionalists can still opt for wood veneers). The new leather seats are elevated with diamond-pattern stitching.
Impressive, the best news, though, is that the company's torquey and refined 2.2-liter diesel engine is now linked to an outstanding six-speed automated transmission. It's a smooth system that effortlessly shifts through the ratios. Drivers can choose Sport mode for more responsiveness, or take complete control with the sequential shift option.
Pros
Reasonable base cost, sporty handling, all-wheel drive, and the only of its model with a manual transmission now available.
Cons
Spare interior design, some less-than-prestigious Ford-themed switchgear, and external stylistic cues, and a price are way higher than vehicles in its class.
