Ford Flex in Nigeria

The 2019 Flex was introduced in 2009 with fanfare and to hails of innovation. Was its original idea that brilliant? Well, Ford's boldly blocky people-moving crossover, a geometric cross between a minivan, sedan, and limo, continues to stand apart from the crowd. The Flex remains a practical, seven-seat, family-friendly utility vehicle while being distinctive in the driveway.

Overview

With a wheelbase of 118 inches, the Flex is about 7 inches longer than a Honda Pilot and 5 inches longer than a Ford Explorer. It's also a lot lower than both, which is appealing.

The long-lasting 3.5-liter V-6 engine with 287 horsepower and 254 pound-feet of torque comes standard, combined with Ford's renowned 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine performs admirably with front-wheel drive, but because the Flex is already so heavy, the all-wheel-drive adds a significant amount of performance. The AWD system works well, transferring 100% of the power to either the front or back wheels.

The Flex comes with some useful active-safety technologies, but much of it is optional and only available on the more expensive models (the Limited, for example, comes with blind-spot monitors). Forward-collision alerts with automated emergency braking, as well as adaptive cruise control and a power-folding third-row seat, will set you back by an extra cost.

Why you should consider getting one

The Ford Flex comes with two V-6 engines, each displacing 3.5 liters and coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. The base engine produces 287 horsepower and is available in front-wheel or all-wheel-drive configurations. The upmarket Limited model comes standard with all-wheel drive and an optional twin-turbo V-6 engine that produces 365 horsepower.

The Flex's cabin can be fitted with a variety of amenities, although just a few are included as standard. The Flex is a cargo-hauling champ with a big, flat load floor when both rows of the rear seats are folded flat. Optional features include adaptive cruise control, front collision warning, and a 12-speaker Sony audio system, but more current rivals offer more advanced driver-assistance systems.

Driving impression of the Ford Flex

The Flex's standard 287-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 engine is smooth and operates nicely with the 6-speed automatic transmission. Most of the time, its acceleration is adequate, but it has to work hard to overcome the car's 4,500-pound weight.

The 365-hp twin-turbo V-6, on the other hand, is more than capable of doing so. The Flex accelerates with quick reaction and sufficient power for highway passing with this engine, which is only available with the all-wheel-drive Limited. There are also some lusty sounds provided by the engine. It has a 6-speed automatic transmission as well, but with paddle shifters.

Although it may be challenged in fast rough corners, the suspension is sufficiently compliant. Even in a canyon, it can be enjoyable, which is saying a lot for a family seven-seater. Its 118-inch wheelbase, which is five inches longer than the Explorer's, aids in providing a smooth, calm ride.

Do you want one?

The 2019 Ford Flex is primarily aimed at large families. It requires a twin-turbo engine for more pleasant acceleration, as well as all-wheel drive, in order to be a good family vehicle in snowy areas. To be as safe as possible, the car requires the optional active safety elements. If you can afford it, the Flex is a fascinating and unique alternative to a mundane crossover or minivan.
