Hyundai Elantra in Nigeria

The 2020 Hyundai Elantra is a no-nonsense, value-packed compact sedan that stays true to its maker's heritage. Thanks to a vast variety of standard features, every Elantra is a true bargain. While the interior materials are obviously low-cost, the Elantra is simple to live with, thanks in part to the basic touchscreen's intuitive interface that supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The base engine is a 2.0-liter inline-four that is competent but not extraordinary. The turbocharged variants should appeal to more discriminating shoppers. The Elantra Eco gets 41 miles per gallon on the interstate, while the Elantra Sport has 201 horsepower.

Pros and cons of the vehicle

Pros

  • Tons of features for the price.
  • Excellent fuel economy.
  • Peppy turbocharged engines were available.

Cons

  • Cramped back seat.
  • Mediocre handling.
  • Interior materials look and feel cheap.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

Elantra models with the regular 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine have typical acceleration statistics for the compact-sedan class, but the engine seems sluggish until you push it into the higher rev zone. The turbocharged engine in the Eco variant, which produces greater power low in the rpm range, works in tandem with the quick-shifting dual-clutch automatic transmission to deliver a more responsive driving experience in town. The Eco has a duller throttle response, which, along with the altered transmission type, means you'll have to compress the pedal much more to get the car to accelerate quickly.

The Elantra's suspension calibration is strong but not harsh, resulting in a well-controlled ride that absorbs bumps with minimal structural reverberation. The low-rolling-resistance tires on the Eco model don't provide as much traction as the larger wheel-and-tire setup on the Limited model, but the difference isn't obvious in everyday driving. The Elantra's braking performance is excellent, as it comes to a complete stop from 70 mph in just 168 feet. In a panic-stop situation, the pedal feels sturdy, instilling confidence.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The dashboard of the Hyundai Elantra is stylish and offers easy-to-use controls. It has a comfortable driver's seat with a natural-feeling interaction between the seat, pedals, and steering wheel. Although the flat bottom cushion isn't as supportive as we'd like, the front seats are reasonably comfy. The back seat isn't as spacious as other competitors', and the bottom cushion is low and could need more thigh support.

The Elantra doesn't have the largest trunk in its class, but it does feature a wide trunk opening that makes loading larger objects more easier. When the trunk is closed, however, it is hinged on some space. The glovebox and center console are roomy, but the front and rear door pockets are smaller than typical.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The Elantra has the most up-to-date infotainment and connection capabilities. Every other version has a standard 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while base models have a basic 5.0-inch display. With well-organized menus and plenty of hard buttons and knobs, the interface is clear and simple to operate. There's an 8.0-inch touchscreen with navigation, wireless phone charging, and a more powerful sound system, but no mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.
