Hyundai Tiburon in Nigeria

In terms of price, the Hyundai Tiburon competes with the low-cost sports coupes Honda Civic Si and Scion TC, but it also outperforms the more expensive Mitsubishi Eclipse. The Eclipse has more power, but the Tiburon has better handling and is sportier in certain aspects.

The suspension of the Tiburon SE is stiff yet not uncomfortable. The Tiburon SE's front-wheel-drive grips the road better than the Eclipse's, so it pays off in the corners. The Tiburon SE has 12-inch cross-drilled front brake rotors, which help it stop well. Tiburon looks rakish from the side, and the 12-spoke SE wheels look fantastic.

The seats are well-bolstered and comfy, with lumbar and seat-bottom support. The available leather with its lovely textile inlays is one of our favorites. The leather-wrapped steering wheel's three spokes are pretty big, but the leather feels lovely in your hands. The instruments have a cool blue backlight. Between the speedometer and the tachometers are temperature and fuel gauges, as well as a digital display for the odometer and average speed. The panel's gunmetal embellishments give a splash of color.

The center stack is squarish, with two large round climate vents on top of the dash and smaller ones on the sides. We found the air conditioning to be really effective. The regular fixtures run down the middle, with satisfactory controls without brain-teasing challenges to work out.

Driving impression

The Hyundai Tiburon SE's throaty, hollow exhaust tone could be the best part about driving it. Running up through the six-speed transmission and listening to the sounds is a lot of fun. Many hot sports cars don't sound as hot as they are, but the SE does an excellent job of expressing sensuous pleasure, so wonderful that you forget it has only 172 horsepower. The tach's redline is 6500 RPM, but the V6 will rev to 7000 RPM before the rev limiter cuts the engine, and it sounds so amazing that you'll want to go that far.

When you look in the rearview mirror, you can see the Tiburon's high spoiler, which serves as a reminder that it is at least trying to be stylish. It does reduce rear visibility, which is annoying because if you're constantly revving the engine to redline, you'll want to keep an eye out for cops.

The aluminum V6 with two overhead cams is installed transversely. It produces 181 pound-feet of torque, which isn't much, but it's all there at 3800 rpm, which is significant. You can pump the throttle without downshifting at 75 mph in sixth gear at 3500 rpm, and the SE accelerates decently; of course, it'll squirt away better if you downshift to fifth. The 172 horsepower engine, which must tow the Tiburon's 2986 pounds, won't provide neck-snapping acceleration. Front-wheel drive torque steer is noticeable, a tug on the steering wheel when cornering and accelerating at the same time.

Do you want to get your own Hyundai Tiburon?

The Tiburon is a beautiful four-seat inexpensive sports car that debuted in 2008. The Mitsubishi Eclipse, which is more expensive, is its main competitor. The Tiburon is available with a four-cylinder or V6 engine; the V6 engine produces little power but has a lively exhaust note. Transmission, suspension, brakes, and bucket seats are all in excellent condition. The Tiburon is a good option if you want a new sports vehicle but don't want to spend a lot of money.
