Isuzu D-Max in Nigeria
Although it may not appear, the all-new Isuzu D-Max signals a minor departure in direction for the self-proclaimed "pick-up pros." Isuzu views itself to be in the market alongside Ford and just behind Toyota, with sales and a growing dealer network. It's even recently acquired eight former Mitsubishi dealers for a little quick expansion.
The previous generation D-Max was introduced in 2012 and had a facelift in 2017 — count how many you see next time you're out, they're everywhere – and, as the adage goes, don't change what ain't busted.
Now, though, Isuzu believes it's time for the D-Max to take a more 'lifestyle' approach, moving away from its prior workaday image with caution. However, this does not imply that it has deviated too much from the original recipe. And it's already a success. This new model has been on sale in Thailand for a little over a year and is now outselling the Toyota Hilux for the first time. Isn't it very good?

Interior
The highest level of specification, V-foray Cross enters into the lifestyle market and the interior standard varies greatly across the D-Max lineup. Leather, soft-touch materials, huge plush recliners, and a 9.0-inch touchscreen screen with CarPlay and Android Auto are all standard on V-Cross models. The aesthetics are dated, but the touchscreen is responsive and the size is appropriate for the inside. EIGHT grab handles and TEN cupholders are also included in double cabs.
Space? Plentiful. That applies to both front- and back-seat passengers (who also benefit from 20mm shoulder room, higher hip points, and more reclined seats in comparison to the predecessor). With two gloveboxes and an extra compartment buried into the top of the dash, there's plenty of room. And, you know, there's a huge cargo bed only a few feet behind you. Family vacations should be simple.
Driving Impression
If we're being honest, the old D-Max was quite workmanlike to drive on the road, and the new one isn't much different. However, it must also flourish in other aspects. Despite its commercial vehicle appearance, the D-2,040kg Max's kerb weight allows it to be driven at passenger car speeds. Something that rivals weighing 200-300kg can't equal.
So, regardless of trim level, the four-cylinder diesel is a tad clattery but delivers a useful 162 bhp and 266lb-ft of low-down torque. That translates to a 12.7-second 0-60 mph time and a top speed of 112 mph.
A two-wheel-drive single cab 'Utility' option is available if you want to go absolutely simple. The single cab Utility with four-wheel drive is a step forward from that. It's really simple and can only be used with a manual transmission. The first few ratios are short, so you'll be working the 'box, and the brakes and steering have a little feel.
Everything above the Utility is four-wheel drive and comes with a six-speed or automatic transmission, as well as a new diff-lock as standard. It locks the rear differential when the gear lever is pressed, so the left and right wheels on the rear axle turn at the same speed. There will be no more getting trapped in the muck.
Do you want to buy your own Isuzu D-Max?
With the posher V-Cross, Isuzu manages to keep the original D-workmanlike Max's abilities while also adding a lot more lifestyle to the lineup. It's not ideal; on-road manners are still a little lacking, and the diesel engine could need some refinement, but it's a good compromise. You may acquire yours at Cars45 for a very low price. Now is the time to go in.
