Engine, Transmission, and Performance

The Fusion comes standard with a 175-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, a good six-speed automatic transmission, and front-wheel drive. The six-speed transmission is standard on all Fusion gasoline variants. Upper trim levels come with either a 181-hp turbocharged 1.5-liter or a 245-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine.

If requested, the 2.0-liter engine can be coupled to all-wheel drive. The Sport model comes equipped with an all-wheel-drive and a 325-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6 engine. A hybrid version of the Fusion is also available. A 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, coupled with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and an electric motor, produces 195 horsepower. A plug-in hybrid is also available, having the same powertrain as the hybrid but with a larger battery pack.

In most configurations, the Fusion combines a smooth ride with responsive handling for a fun driving experience. When pushed hard, the Fusion Sport, thanks to its included adaptive dampers, may seem more like a sports sedan than a family car, albeit its ride and handling aren't quite as crisp as they could be.

The plug-in Energi variant does not perform well, with a soft suspension setup and too light steering robbing it of cornering power. The steering in gas-powered Fusions is responsive and nimble, but the Energi falls short yet again, with limited input and a false, over boosted sensation.

Interior, Infotainment, and Cargo

A Ford Fusion can be austere or sumptuous, with cloth seats or quilted leather, a modest radio screen, or an 8.0-inch touchscreen. Overall, the Fusion's various interior trims are appealing and in line with the rest of the class, although drivers of the base model may feel cheated if they see a luxurious Platinum model cruising down the street.

The Fusion lineup's infotainment options range from dated to completely current. Other Ford models come with the Sync 3 system, which is feature-rich, intuitive, and responsive to user inputs.
