Ford Explorer in Nigeria

The Ford Explorer is credited with helping to kickstart the SUV boom that began in the early 1990s, and the 2020 model is jam-packed with popular features and functionality. The Ford is designed specifically for transporting families, with three rows of seats and plenty of cargo room.

It has a capable turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a fuel-efficient hybrid alternative, and a powerful twin-turbo V-6 engine. The Explorer's diverse selection offers something for everyone, including a pleasant ride and a unique sport-tuned variant.

Pros and cons of the Ford Explorer

Pros

  • Composed ride.
  • Plentiful cargo space.
  • Comfortable driving position.

Cons

  • Cramped third row.
  • Some subpar interior materials.
  • Desirable twin-turbo V-6 is pricey.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

A 300-hp turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine is standard on the Explorer's base, XLT, and Limited models, and it propels the Explorer with authority. The 365-hp twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 in the Platinum model or the sporty Explorer ST, which employs a 400-hp version of the same engine, will appeal to the front-foot drivers.

For 2020, a hybrid version of the Explorer is available, which combines a 3.3-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor to provide 318 horsepower. The Explorer can tow up to 5600 pounds when properly equipped. The Explorer is built on a brand-new rear-wheel-drive architecture, with all-wheel drive available as an option; a 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on all models.

The Explorer ST is significantly more athletic, and its increased power and stronger suspension make it a true performance SUV; the ride and handling are both acceptable and composed but far from engaging.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The 2020 Explorer's EPA fuel-economy ratings fluctuate due to its several powertrain and drivetrain combinations. The rear-drive hybrid variant is the most fuel-efficient, with estimations of up to 27 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway. The hybrid's ratings are reduced by 3 and 4 mpg, respectively when all-wheel drive is added. When experts put the latter through its paces on a 200-mile real-world journey, it only managed 24 miles per gallon on the highway. In comparison, the 400-hp Explorer ST got 25 mpg on the interstate, beating the EPA figure by 1.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The Explorer's cabin is efficient and comfortable—at least for those in the front two rows—despite the unimaginative interior design. A new system that slides the second-row seat out of the way at the push of a button makes it easier to get into the regular third row of seats.

However, once back on board, passengers will notice that the seat is too close to the floor for older children or adults to be comfortable. The Chevy Traverse and the Volkswagen Atlas, for example, offer more comfort in the third row. With both back rows folded flat, you can accommodate four carry-on suitcases behind Ford's third seat or a total of 31 bags.
